7 Effective Copywriting Tips for Marketing Your Business

By: Elite Virtual Executives

Tip # 7 - KISS: Keep it simple stupid
One of the first things to remember when planning an advertisement, an article or marketing materials is that the point of these pieces of writing is to sell. If people find your piece cool or amusing, but they do not get your message, it has been a waste of your energy and money. The simpler the writing and the clearer your message, the more effective the material becomes.

Tip # 6 - Be authentic
If you are true and ethical in your marketing materials, it will reflect positively upon your business. Don’t try to dazzle people with big words or waste time stating the obvious. Just stay focused on what you do well, and how it will benefit the reader. If you start to stray, read tip # 7 again.

Tip # 5 - Make your message consistent
Each time you write, keep your message consistent. Don’t keep changing your focus, or your clients will lose theirs. Keep the focus on the benefits of using your product or service and your customers will soon get the message.

Tip # 4 - Include a ‘Call to Action’
OK, so you have enticed your reader with your simple, authentic, consistent message…now what do they do? Well, you need to make it obvious to the reader what their next step is…

"Call Acme Fireworks experts today to get more bang for your buck…"

"Head to our website to see how re-using banana peels can save you money…"

"Mention this coupon to get 10% off your next blue rinse and beehive combo…" etc etc.

If you don’t give potential clients an obvious and simple opportunity to make contact with your business, they may go somewhere else.

Tip # 3 - Work with a copywriter
Unless you have experience and skill in writing marketing materials, it is wise to work with a copywriter to research and write your materials. It is often useful to have someone outside of the business do the research and copywriting, to bring a freshness to the message.

Tip # 2 - Spell checker is not good enough
If you have written the piece yourself, you need to find someone who is experienced and skilled in copywriting to edit and proofread your piece. Do not rely on spell check or grammar check; they are notoriously unreliable.

Tip # 1 - Be patient!
Remember that there is a lag between the time you market your business and the time the client takes action – so don’t think that your marketing efforts have been unsuccessful if you don’t get an immediate response.
