Duck and Weave for your health!

It was with slight intrepidation that I headed down on a Wednesday night to the Domain for my first taste of ‘Box Class’ - a company I’d heard of through the great vine that offers boxing fitness classes.

My new year’s resolution to improve my fitness and get some sort of a beach body before another summer had passed, was somehow managing to slip past to the middle of January and into oblivion for another year.

I met up with Luke our instructor, who just happened to be the exact image of what I am trying to achieve, before being introduced to the rest of the class. I was pleased to see that the class was not too large, 6 of us in this particular case, which allowed Luke time to impart some of his knowledge and help me to improve on a some what dubious boxing technique.

The group was split up into pairs, myself being teamed up with a rather fit Scottish man and we started off with a series of combinations and pad work. At first I found it rather hard to get the combinations right and was worried that I was ruining my partner’s workout. I should not have worried as the sessions are designed for all abilities, and with the assistance of Luke and the patience of my partner I soon felt that I could change careers and imagined stepping out in Vegas…

I was rudely brought to my senses as the sessions developed into a series of sprints and resistance work combined with more pad work. The only relief being when you were swapping gloves! Throughout the session Luke is the ringmaster guiding the class through the workout. I noticed that Luke, through clever partnering was able to adapt the workout for each individual, meaning that the classes are ideal for the office, couples or friends who are looking for a workout that they can do together.

Toward the end of the workout as we focused on the abdominal region, I realised that Vegas was probably a bit to far, but that beach body? Well March can still be warm.
