Super shopping – save money while you spend

I have said it before and I will definitely say it again. I love to shop. The thrill of a great bargain. Shopping all year for the best items for Christmas and birthdays.

But I am also a shopper with a plan. Many hours of scoping shops for that one special deal. Ebay and Oztion not to mention shopping dot com. They all play a part in my Christmas hunt.

What does that have to do with saving money? Everything. You see, a lot of window-shopping happens before I even part with a cent. And each cent is carefully used. Trust me – it is too hard to get to fritter away …..but you already knew that.

I am also a year round shopper. A lot of my shopping begins with the boxing day specials. If you are savvy, and have a plan, you can get a head start. So this is how I save money by spending... wisely.

1. Have a list. I use an Excel Spreadsheet on my computer. And I allow a certain amount per person. This can control your spending, because you know your limit before you start. Having said that, be smart in setting your limit. Know what you are considering – if you are unrealistic, it won’t work and you will end up discouraged with the saving while you spend plan and blow the whole budget.
2. Know your target (be is size, colour or preferences). Then choose slowly – a lot of time we spend in haste and end up forking out lots more than necessary. If you are unsure, it may not be the buy of the century. Move on.
3. Use cash. By using cash, you can only spend what you have.
4. Check online – can you get a similar item cheaper (but remember to factor in the postage costs.)
5. Shop year round. You can pick up amazing specials in the ‘dead’ periods before Tax Returns etc when everyone just wants turnover.

Yes, you can save when you shop – just remember to factor in realistic amounts, shop year round and track your expenses. The first year or two is harder but then it becomes a way of life. And you can get to enjoy the hunt for the perfect budget priced gift.
