1. Tell us about your business

Owner operated wine store, specialising in clean skin and boutique wines, and we have a large variety of both local and imported beers. We are not your average wine store.

2. When and why did you start your business?

I have over 20 years experience in this industry and started this business in 1994 because I became aware that there was a gap in the market for a wine store that specialised in clean skin and boutique label wines and that there was also a gap in the market for local and imported beers.

3. On a personal level, what have you achieved with your business?

I am proud to say that over the 6 years at this store I am now beginning to realise this dream of a specialist wine store with a great range of beers.

4. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business?

Some of the greatest challenges have been from the constant barage of adds coming from the "big boys" (Dan Murphy & 1st Choice) Lack of funds to compete on the add compaign.

5. What activities have been successful in promoting your business?

I have tried to get listed in as many free listing as possible. I have set up my own web site. Getting to know the local traders in my immediate area. Appropriate signage in front of my store.

6. What activities were less successful for marketing your business?

I tried Google, but didn't really work for me, maybe I didn't spend enough or didn't target correctly.

7. Name your favourite thing about your business

Being my own business I can try diferent things, because only by trying new things you will know if they work. I do not get dictated to by the larger companies, I choose who i want to deal with.

8. Who or what other businesses or business people inspire you?

Any one who has a go.

9. What are your plans for the future of your business?

To continue along the same lines as when I started this business, stick to the basics quality clean skin and boutique labels, expand on my already large beer range and to continue to seek out new products that fit my store. As I said before Not Your Average Wine Store.

10. Share your best business tip with our readers.

Don't be afraid to try new things. Customer always come first. Shelves must always be stocked and fridges full. Remember, you cant sell something if the customer cant see it.
