Global Copywriting1. Tell us about your business Global Copywriting is the undertaking by Sarah Mitchell to blend her professional skills into a company that offers the best Content Marketing and B2B freelance copywriting services available. Combining successful technical, sales and writing careers, Sarah provides a perspective that relies on more than just talent. If you want somebody that understands the purpose behind your marketing collateral, you’re not going to find anyone better. Starting out in the USA afforded Sarah the opportunity to understand an aggressive marketplace where providing excellent service is a requirement to survival. Being adaptable allowed her to move to other countries absorbing the best parts of business culture around the world. Importantly, it taught her that while the USA gets a lot of things right, many international communities enjoy taking a different path to meet their objectives. The company name, Global Copywriting, accurately reflects the wealth and depth of experience possessed by Sarah Mitchell. 2. When and why did you start your business? Global Copywriting launched in October 2008 at what turned out to be the height of the Global Financial Crisis. The initial idea behind Global Copywriting was to provide professional writing services to the ICT industry in Perth, Western Australia. While writing for technical companies remains a passion, I'm happy to work with anyone looking for an experienced writer to tackle their Content Marketing and B2B marketing requirements, large or small, anywhere in the world. 3. On a personal level, what have you achieved with your business? I had been freelance writing for some years but Global Copywriting was my first commercial venture. I never realized I had an entrepreneurial streak until I formally opened a company. I originally expected to work about 20 hours a week, earning enough to cover holiday expenses. It quickly became full-time enterprise and viable business venture. 4. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business? I didn't know a single soul in Western Australia. I have worked in many different countries but with a corporate environment behind me. Starting from scratch with no reputation or connections was harder than I expected. 5. What activities have been successful in promoting your business? Social media helped me launch my company and continues to be a valuable method to market Global Copywriting. I rely on blogging, LinkedIn, Twitter and, to a lesser extent, Facebook to promote my business. I also contribute to the Content Marketing Institute (www.contentmarketinginstitute.com) and BizSugar (www.bizsugar.com). Public speaking engagements on the topics of social media and content marketing always generate leads for me. I also work on the committee of Women are I.T, WA (WITWA) and have developed a valuable business network through them. 6. What activities were less successful for marketing your business? Attending industry events like the Gartner briefings proved fruitless. Surprisingly, I found the Australian Computer Society lacking in networking opportunities, as well. 7. Name your favourite thing about your business I work from home so I'm able to blend my professional life with my home life with minimal impact to my family. I love the autonomy that provides. 8. Who or what other businesses or business people inspire you? Ryan Briggs (www.ryanbriggs.com.au) has been a huge inspiration. He's full of ideas and creative ways of approaching problems. Bambi Gordon at The Brew (www.thebrew.com.au) continues to keep me thinking about how my business should be operating. 9. What are your plans for the future of your business? I'm in a place of reflection. Given the unexpected success I've had with Global Copywriting, I'm considering changes to my business model. Clearly, Global Copywriting is providing a needed service and I have to decide what the next step will be. I doubt I'll be a sole trader working from home for much longer. 10. Share your best business tip with our readers. Oh boy, I have so many of them on different levels. I think my first piece of advice would be to start a blog for your business.
