1. Tell us about your business

Slushtails is a locally owned and operated business in Western Australia, servicing Perth and surrounding suburbs. We provide frozen cocktail slush machines direct to your door - no ice, no blender, no mess. We deliver to the requested location, set up the machine at least 3 hours prior to your function and the following day we will collect and take care of the cleaning of the machine.

2. When and why did you start your business?

I commenced my business in October 2007. I am a very creative person and hated having to conform to company rules and regulations set out by others that I just didn\'t agree with. I love to step outside the square, be innovative and give 150% in customer quality service.

3. On a personal level, what have you achieved with of your business?

I have challenged myself every step of the way. In the first year, the going was very tough, trying to market a new business is very difficult on limited funds. I certainly considered a number of times closing the doors but it definately gets easier once you know your business.

4. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business?

Having to deal with importing from China. It is extremely challenging and they don't do business like we do here in Australia. I have learnt to be very patient.

5. What activities have been successful in promoting your business?

The basis of any good business has to be your website. I wrote and compiled my entire website from scratch and then got someone to put it together. It really allowed me to do a heck of a lot of research on the industry and it has been my shining star throughout the growth of my business.

6. What activities were less successful for marketing your business?

Expensive advertising. You don't need to spend the big bucks to hit your target market. Just be still, think outside the square and you can come up with some great ideas to get your business out there that costs next to nothing.

7. Name your favourite thing about your business

There are 2 things I love. When you deliver a machine people are so excited to see you, they are in a great frame of mind because they are having a party. I love it when I pick the machine up the following day and people tell me with great delight what a huge success the cocktails were and that they cant wait to have another party to hire the machines.

8. Who or what other businesses or business people inspire you?

Richard Branson - Virgin. I read his autobiography when I first started up my business and it inspired me immensely to never give up.

9. What are your plans for the future of your business?

One day at a time at the moment. We have just advanced into Hens Party accessories. I dont believe in straying too far away from my base product. I never want to compromise the quality of service that I can currently give by getting big.

10. Share your best business tip with our readers.

You have to back yourself and believe in yourself. People will tell you that your idea won't work or it won't make you money but there will always be pessimists in this world. Nobody can make you feel inferior without your permission.
