1. Tell us about your business

We supply the ThermaClear acne clearing device. We have a special website for this www.thermaclear.com.au and export these worldwide. Our main business however is the supply of portable diagnostic ultrasound equipment. We supply the Interson SeeMore USB ultrasounds, several portables from SIUI company in China, and the revolutionary eZono -3000 unit from Germany that is specialised for nerve and vascular imaging and ICU units.

2. When and why did you start your business?

November 2007. After several years as a director in a large dental company who bought my share in the business, this was a natural progression for me as I had wished to make use of my over 30 years of experience in the diagnostic imaging industry. I also wanted to have a business that I could fully own and run the way I wanted.

3. On a personal level, what have you achieved with of your business?

A good deal of satisfaction as we steadily grow in our chosen markets.

4. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business?

We are focused on the portable market. When we decided to follow this route our SeeMore product was almost the only unit in the market. This year has seen the entry of giant competitors such as GE into this market as well as the introduction of models from several other huge suppliers such as Siemens and Sonosite. Worldwide billions of dollars are now being spent to promote the ultrasound in this market segment, proving that our choice was correct. Our products are holding up well because of their unique designs and competitive pricing. Though certainly we do sometimes lose sales to these huge multinational players, we are able to latch in to the market awareness they have been helping to build with their marketing campaigns.

5. What activities have been successful in promoting your business?

1. Our website www.ultramedix.com.au has certainly created enquiries and we also help it along with a google adwords campaign. As this site gains in popularity we will eventually stop the adwords, just as we've been able to do with our ThermaClear website. 2. We also do the "old fashioned thing" of leaving fliers with hospital departments and at selected specialists rooms. This also works for us. 3. We exhibit at several congresses per year. Expensive, but gains us enquiries especially from interstate doctors. 4. We have a prestigious training institute who are impressed enough with our products to now have them on their recommended list if doctors ask them. This is fairly recent but is proving to be a good source for referrals. 5. We have successfully advertised in "Australian Doctor" a monthly paper that goes out to a large amount of doctors.

6. What activities were less successful for marketing your business?

Advertising that we placed in a rural doctors journal

7. Name your favourite thing about your business

The fact that I am still able to work from home and am able to keep expenses low until we grow larger.

8. Who or what other businesses or business people inspire you?

I have had some amazing work experiences here in the dental business and have certain marketing gurus that I've worked with who have inspired me to achieve what they have.

9. What are your plans for the future of your business?

To grow larger, generate more income and to successfully build a strong and stable company that becomes a "household" name in my industry

10. Share your best business tip with our readers.

Believe in your abilities and focus, focus, focus. Never let adversity deter you from your goals. Don't aim at instant fortunes and always keep at it and conduct yourself with high business morals. In time your goals will be achieved.
