Ryan Briggs - Web & Print Creative1. Tell us about your business Working in both web and print design, I’m a designer specialising in brand and marketing, “Information by Design”. My clients come in all shapes and sizes and are spread around different industries. I’m most interested in finding practical, workable solutions. I’ve built a reliable network of independent professionals – copywriters, developers and even other designers – delivering products to my clients that immediately become an asset to their business. An essential part of my model is to form long-term working relationships with each client. 2. When and why did you start your business? My company launched in October 2008 at what was the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis, although no one realised it at the time. There seemed to be a gap in the market for someone able and willing to take an integrated approach to design. A lot of designers work exclusively on the web or in print but I’ve always been interested in the whole picture. So many businesses end up having multiple service providers or get disenchanted working with big agencies. I knew I could offer a personalised service taking into account all the design requirements for each client. 3. On a personal level, what have you achieved with your business? The thing I’m most happy about are the actual projects I’ve been able to do. I’ve got a strong body of work representing different industries in both commercial and not-for-profit organisations. I’ve enjoyed consistent growth which has lead to financial stability. Word of mouth referrals and repeat business from existing clients keep me busy which is extremely satisfying. 4. What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in growing your business? In the early days, inconsistent cash flow was a big challenge. Staffing is something I have to keep a focus on – finding reliable people with good skills and a strong work ethic. As with most small business owners, I struggle to find a reasonable balance between home and my working life. 5. What activities have been successful in promoting your business? When I first started out, I had a lot of success with direct mail and landed some of my first clients. I invest time in online marketing and social media. I also revised my website to include more focused content to attract prospects. Probably the most effective thing I’ve done is spend time educating my clients who, in turn, have given me valuable word of mouth referrals. 6. What activities were less successful for marketing your business? It didn’t take long to figure out my initial one-page website wasn’t doing the job I needed it to do. 7. Name your favourite thing about your business Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a client take a product and really make it work. Websites and social media profiles can grow stagnant very quickly but they can also turn into valuable assets with the right attention. Of course, getting positive feedback on a project or design is always fantastic. 8. Who or what other businesses or business people inspire you? Collaborating with other independent professionals has opened my eyes to so many possibilities. Sarah Mitchell of Global Copywriting shares a common vision but she possesses totally different talents. Jimmy Hilis of Kinetic Design reminds me anything is possible. My clients continually give me the parameters and specifications to weave magic. 9. What are your plans for the future of your business? There’s not enough room to list them all here but a few key plans are: • After being mentored early in my career, I’m inspired to return the favour and take on trainee/internship employees • Move into more consultancy work • Continue building collaborative business relationships with both clients and professional alliances 10.
