Small Business Embracing Content Marketing TrendSmall businesses are outpacing larger companies in the adoption of content marketing strategies according to the 2010 Content Marketing Survey produced by Junta42. The annual study for marketing professionals in North America revealed approximately 60% of the marketing professionals surveyed plan to increase their content marketing spending in 2010. Interestingly, small companies are dedicating 40% of their total marketing budgets to content marketing compared to just 18% for larger companies. Sarah Mitchell, owner of Global Copywriting, is not surprised. “SMBs are perfectly poised to take advantage of this huge shift in marketing. They can develop quality content quickly, they target their audience more effectively and it’s easier for them to get content loaded onto their websites.” Mitchell goes on to explain, “Large corporations can take months to get one document approved for publication and changing a website can be a cumbersome process.” According to Joe Pulizzi, founder of Junta42, “Basically, content marketing is the art of communicating with your customers and prospects without selling. It is non-interruption marketing. Instead of pitching your products or services, you are delivering information that makes your buyer more intelligent.” A significant shift in consumer behaviour brought about by the internet has seen expenditure on traditional advertising decline for the first time since the Great Depression. Consumers are educating themselves and are doing it online. While the USA is leading the world on the content marketing trend, evidence suggests it won’t be for long. The Small Business Marketing Day held on 30 March 2010 in Melbourne features a workshop on Content Marketing presented by Sarah Mitchell. Bambi Gordon, organiser of the event, says, “Small business drives the Australian economy so we keep close track of worldwide trends. It’s obvious content marketing is going to be the next big thing in marketing so we’ve made it part of our program.” Small business owners are encouraged to register for the first of the national tour of marketing training days which will be held in Melbourne next week by visiting www.thewoo.com.au or calling organisers on 1300 55 32 35.
