The "Egg Timer" or Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Test

Recent media reports have drawn significant attention to a "new" "Egg Timer" test for women. Monash IVF has offered this test for over two years. The test remains available to all interested women.

AMH is a hormone that is produced by some cells in ovarian follicles. The levels of AMH detected in a woman's blood are thought to reflect the egg supply remaining in the woman's ovary - this has been described as the 'ovarian reserve'. As a woman ages, the supply of follicles in the ovary decreases and this in turn is reflected by a decline in the AMH detected in the blood.

Monash IVF has offered testing for AMH since January 2008. Last year we tested 221 patients for AMH as part of pre-IVF screening requests by our IVF doctors. While our laboratory can accept specimens following a referral from a General Practitioner, we recommend that the results of AMH tests are discussed with a doctor with expertise in fertility issues. A full list of our affiliated IVF doctors are provided on Monash IVF's website.

Patients should note that no Medicare rebate applies for this test and that the current private fee is $60. Other charges that may apply are a collection fee and consultation fee with a specialist doctor depending upon where the pathology referral was received from.

Monash IVF continues to lead the way in the advancement of the technology our fundamental philosophy has not changed. We use a team approach to deliver the highest quality service in a supportive and compassionate environment where we continually strive for the optimum success rate.

A number of clinic and treatment options are offered by us. To ensure that our services are able to be accessed by all who may require them, clinics have been established in a number of city locations and in regional areas throughout Australia. These clinics are able to provide personalised service in a familiar environment while having the back-up of the entire Monash IVF teams. We are continually exploring innovative approaches to increase our success rates and services allowing us to offer our expertise and quality systems to more couples in Australia and overseas.

If you wish to undertake the "Egg Timer" or more correctly the Anti-Mullerian Hormone Test, you simply need to obtain a referral to "Monash Reproductive Pathology and Genetics", from your GP or a fertility specialist. Our address is 'Epworth Hospital', Level 4, 89 Bridge Road, Richmond, Vic, 3121.

If you wish to discuss this test further, you can call Dr. Melanie Trivett, on 03 9420 8255.

Monash IVF is Australia's largest IVF (in vitro fertilisation) program renowned for its world class standards and results.

Its team of doctors and scientists have achieved an international reputation for excellence in the field of human reproduction and female infertility.
