Australians being ripped off on European holidaysAustralians planning a holiday to Europe are being warned to watch out for scammers who advertise apartments in cities such as Paris at excellent rates. Carolyn Schonafinger, founder of www.HolidaysToEurope.com.au said often the apartment doesn’t even exist and it’s not until the unsuspecting traveller arrives at their destination that they find out they’ve been had. “A safe and secure way to book accommodation in Europe and know it’s fair dinkum, is to rent directly with an Australian who owns a property in Europe. More and more Aussies are buying holiday rental properties in Europe, particularly in France and Italy, and they love renting them out to fellow Aussies,” Mrs Schonafinger said. That’s one of the reasons she started the Holidays to Europe website, to provide a location for Australians who own European property to connect with Australians who want to book and pay before they leave for their holiday. “I had heard many stories of travellers arriving in a foreign city only to find out the accommodation they had booked – and paid for – via the internet didn’t exist. Out of pocket and with nowhere to stay, it’s a situation that certainly takes the gloss off an overseas holiday,” she said. At Holidays to Europe, travellers deal directly with the property owner who will offer advice on how to get to the property, the main attractions in the region, which restaurants they recommend, where to collect the keys and more. In most cases, payment can be made in Australian dollars, too – saving renters the hassle of foreign currency fluctuations. Mrs Schonafinger advises that if you are planning a European getaway, don’t take a chance with your accommodation. Visit a reputable accommodation directory such as www.HolidaysToEurope.com.au and when you have found a cottage, apartment or villa that appeals to you, contact the owner directly to book your dream European holiday.
