The New Skoda SuperbAS BEAUTIFUL AS IT IS USEFULAlthough new to Australia, the Skoda Superb has a long history - there has been a Superb in the Skoda line up at one stage or another, since the 1930s. It is not only the most luxurious car Skoda has ever built, it is one that sets new standards for quality, practicality, design and value. Sitting at the top of the Skoda product range, it demonstrates that through bold design and engineering innovation, Skoda has created one of the most desirable cars in its segment. Its arrival completes a model range where each line now has distinct Skoda design DNA rather than styling cues borrowed from elsewhere. At the same time, its confidence will ensure Skoda's plans for growth. The new Superb offers class leading technology, craftsmanship, elegance and style. Clever features such as the TwinDoor, which turns the car from a sedan to a liftback at the touch of a button, lifts the Superb to even greater heights. Although the design has retained the traditional sedan concept, the new Superb now has a tailgate which places practically no limits on what can be transported. The unique, patented TwinDoor variable boot opening, designed by engineers at Skoda, offers an extremely practical, functional and well thought out solution to storage woes. Depending on what is required, either the boot lid alone can be opened when smaller items are to be stored or by operating two small buttons on the edge of the boot lid to activate an electro-mechanical release, the Superb driver can lift the entire boot lid together with the rear window. The rear aperture is then almost doubled in size allowing bulkier items to be loaded. When the rear seat backs are in an upright position, the boot will accommodate 565 litres of luggage and if they are folded forward, the volume increases to an amazing 1,670 litres. The new Skoda Superb is 4,838 millimetres long, 1,817 millimetres wide and 1,462 millimetres high. The new Superb offers a range of engines to fulfil the needs of most drivers with two petrol variants and one diesel engine available in Australia. All of the engines operate with direct fuel injection and excel as a result of their low fuel consumption and CO2 emission values. The 1.8 TSI with 118 kW of power, recently introduced to the new Octavia range, will be a popular choice. It provides peak torque of 250 Nm in the range from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm and propels the front-wheel driven Superb to a top speed of 220 km/h. The 1.8 TSI is matched to the latest 7-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) transmission, which delivers exceptionally smooth shifting and utilises the full potential of the engine's torque. Acceleration is quick, needing only 8.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. The other petrol choice is in the new Superb 4x4 - a 3.6-litre V6 FSI with 191kW of power and a maximum torque of 350Nm between 2,500 rpm and 5,000 rpm. This engine powers the car from 0 to 100km/h in only 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h. The 3.6-litre V6 is supplied with 6-speed DSG and the immense engine power is translated smoothly into driving power through a permanent four-wheel drive system. Torque distribution is designed to be variable and a fourth-generation Haldex clutch monitors this electronically so during normal driving traction conditions, 100% of the power goes to the front axle and when needed, all 350Nm of torque can be sent to the rear wheels. The 2.0 TDI diesel works with common-rail direct injection delivering outstanding performance with remarkable fuel economy. It provides 125kW and a maximum torque of 350Nm between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm. The potential of this engine range is evident in the high level of driving performance. Top speed is 220 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds. This powerful diesel engine is coupled with a 6-speed DSG which delivers a combined fuel consumption figure of just 6.9-litres per 100km. Skoda Superb Pricing
